  • A Special Meeting

Dr. D. A. Waite was invited by Pastor Kenneth Rainey to speak at his Wayside Baptist Church in Greenville, SC, May 20-23. He defended the KJB and the Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek Words underlying it. The meeting was very successful in spite of great opposition from supporters of Bob Jones University. Many members of the church who supported BJU left the church. Please pray for Pastor Rainey, Wayside Baptist Church, and their financial needs as a result of their stand for the KJB and the Words that underlie it. Many DBS and BFT books were sold. In addition to those attending the meetings in person, we had viewers from people in (1) 27 States in the United States, (2) Canada, (3) Australia, (4) New Zealand, (5) Peru, and (6) Brazil by way of the Internet.

Several new families began attending the church as a result of the meeting. Dr. Waite's excellent presentations during the conference are available on DVD. All six messages can be viewed by clicking on http://www.biblefortoday.org/idx_videos_wayside_bc.htm or go to BibleForToday. org and/or DeanBurgonSociety.org and click on the Wayside Baptist Church BAR.

  • Editor's Corner by Dr. D. A. Waite, Th.D., Ph.D. DBS President

This year's Dean Burgon Society's meeting will be a very important one. If you will read carefully Dr. H. D. Williams' excel-lent article on POSTMODENISM, you will be able to see what happened at my meetings in Greenville, SC with Pastor Kenneth Rainey and the Wayside Baptist Church. Because of the strong affinity with Bob Jones Univer-sity's (BJU) erroneous Bibliology, more than half of Pastor Rainey's church tried to cancel my speaking on the "DEFENSE OF THE KING JAMES BIBLE AND ITS UNDER-LYING WORDS." You can view for yourself all six of the 202 Power-Point slides. Turn to BibleForToday.org or DeanBur gonSociety.org and click on the 2nd BAR on that page or paste in http://www.bible fortoday.org/idx_videos_wayside_bc.htm

  • POSTMODERNISM VERSUS SCRIPTURE by Dr. H. D. Williams,M.D., Ph.D. A DBS Vice President

Scripture "For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blas-phemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, (3) Without natural affection, truce-breakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, (4) Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; (5) Having a form of god-liness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away." (2 Timothy 3:2-5)

  • A Conference

A recent conference was held in Greenville, SC, on Defending the King James Bible from May 20-23, 2007. The meeting was held at the request of Pastor Kenneth Rainey, Wayside Baptist Church, who invited Pastor D. A. Waite, Th.D., Ph.D., from the Bible For Today Baptist Church, to present his defense of the KJB [see Dr. Waite's book, Defending the King James Bible, available from Bible For Today, [BFT #1594 @ $12+$5 S&H)].

Some members of the church were immediately upset that Dr. Waite was invited and left the church. This divisiveness oc-curred because a person in the church identified himself as having links to Bob Jones University (BJU). BJU opposes Dr. Waite. A whispering campaign was started, which accused Dr. Waite of heresy. In spite of the significant attack on Pastor Rainey and the financial strain he incurred as a result of about 22 members leaving the church, he still held the conference. He remains firm in his stand for the KJB and the underlying Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek Words.

This author was privileged to attend the meeting at Wayside Baptist Church in Green-ville. The presentation by Dr. Waite was superb. The significant question-and-answer- time-periods, which were allowed by Dr. Waite and Pastor Rainey, were excellent. They demonstrated Dr. Waite's incredible knowledge, wisdom, mastery of the version issues, and command of the Bible languages, Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek.

  • Postmodernism

Some insights were gained by this author from the details surrounding this meeting, from observation of the people attending, and from some of the questions posed at the conference during the question and answer periods.

(1) Insight 1: Without a doubt, postmodernism (PM) has infected society, including the church. Postmodernism is a term coined by Jacques Derrida. It is a system of thought which goes beyond "modernism," which stressed everything is based on reason (or evidence).

Modernistic thought had its beginning in the Reformation and reached its pinnacle with the publication of Darwin's fallacious book, The Origin of Species, in 1859. It was spurred on by the intense and dramatic results of science in the twentieth century.

However, man began to realize that science does not bring about a utopia or demonstrate man's goodness; rather just the opposite. For example, the rationality for the development of the atomic bomb, and its subsequent use in World War II, cast a cloud over the tenets of "reason." The loss of innocence subsequently caused amillen-nialism (the theological belief that the goodness of man would gradually bring about a Biblical allegorical "1000 year" period of time known as the millennium) to be disregarded by many.

In spite of the realization that man seeks "his own way," is "lustful," is going "astray," and is "covetous" (Jer. 17:9, Isa 53:6, 2 Pe. 3:3, 2 Tim. 3:2), it is not spurring an abandonment of Humanism and a (re)turning to the Scripture. Rather, an abandonment of "reason" has been replaced by an intensified turning to "self" that is spurred on by the infusion of Eastern thinking. Such Eastern thinking (especially Buddhism) rests on the premise that truth is "both/and" versus either/or. For example, God exists and God does not exist are both true, correct, or possible beliefs at the same time in Eastern thinking.

Postmodern man has decided that he alone is capable of determining "truth" for himself. It is a form of relativism, but a relativism that is turned inward. It is a relativism that states the only "truth" is what is best for me. This is thinking that goes far beyond the relativism of past generations. There are no longer any "true" moral com-mitments. The PM thinker reasons that what is right for you may not be (and probably is not) right for me. Therefore, PM man says: "If I determine something is right for me, then it does not matter the evidence, reason-ableness, or witness of individuals." Post-modernism "assumes that Christianity may be true for some people, in some places, and at some times, but it is not true for all people, in all places, and at all times. It is relatively true, not absolutely or universally true" [Mc-Dowell, as quoted in The LIE That Changed the Modern World, p. 366 [BFT #3125 @ $16+$5 S&H]. The difference of PM from modernist thinking is that only "I" can determine the significance of "relativism." Therefore, stealing, lying, murder, for-nication, etc., may be right for me in some places and at some time (i.e. no morals).

Some of the questions asked at the Greenville conference and some of the sub-sequent actions by individuals after the meet-ing reflect this type of thinking.

For example, in spite of the superb presentation by Dr. Waite, and his precise answers to questions, one family said that they wanted to use the modern versions and left the church. Their response was contrary to: (1) the evidence presented by Dr. Waite, (2) the clear Scriptures presented mandating God's preservation of His Words, (3) the defense of the KJB in regard to its SUPERIOR texts, SUPERIOR translation technique, SUPERIOR translators, AND SUPERIOR theology.

The reaction by this family is clearly indicative of postmodernism. It is way beyond the relativism of modernism. The relativism of modernism has at least main-tained a thread of morality: that is, there is truth, but its application is relative to a situ-ation. The postmodernist does not believe even this tenet, but rather, truth is only what "I" determine it to be. Could this be the reason for rejection of clear evidence and Truth by many "so-called" fundamentalist schools?

  • Words Versus The Message Or Concept

(2) Insight 2: Words are no longer important to many people because of PM. Inferences, or the implied message, or a con-cept is all that is important. But God pro-mised to preserve His Words, saying:

"Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my Words shall not pass away." (Matt. 24:35, Mk. 13:31, Lk. 21:33. Note these exact words occur three times in the Bible and contain the strongest negative in the Greek language (OU ME) meaning: "by no means," or "never, never, never")(cf. Psa. 12:6-7, Psa. 117, and DOZENS of other places).

This insight was stimulated by a ques-tion asked by a BJU graduate and the member of a local Greenville church that uses many modern versions. The question asked related to Words left out of a sentence but the meaning could be inferred by knowledge known to some people. (i.e. If I mention that I am a member of a certain church, why should I have to mention the pastor's name.) The person asking the question implied also that modern versions were satisfactory be-cause they did not exclude any doctrine by leaving out Words in some places.

This is a "midget" question, and could be posed only by a postmodernist who does not understand "covenants," "testaments," or contractual law. "Messages, inferences, and concepts" are subject to interpretation and are not absolute. "Words" form a message, not a message the "Words" (e.g. many churches have the same name, therefore to precisely identify the church, a pastor's name is im-portant).

A "message, inference, or concept" (not based upon precise, preserved Words) allows an individual when confronted at the seat of judgment to claim: "I did not understand." This allows the individual to pick and choose what is "truth" according to "internal desires" (as opposed to external written instructions). This is the relativism of the postmod-ernist–the message–"I" determine what is the "truth" in the message.

Need we remind individuals that judg-ments based upon precise Words will be the "sine qua non" at the judgment seat of Christ and at the Great White Throne judgment (Jn. 12:47-48)?

  • Words or Peer Group

 (3) Insight 3: Many individuals believe: "My peer group," "my alma mater," and "my friends" are more important to me than the evidence such as: (1) the "received" preserved Words of Scripture (2) the signi-ficant and overwhelming historical evidence, (3) the preserved manuscripts of Biblical books, and (4) ancient church leaders' writings supporting of the Received Texts. It is evident they think:

"If "I" abandon my friends or school (such as BJU, Maranatha, Central, Dallas, and others), concerning the ‘version' issues, then my job, friends, and status in society will be adversely affected."

This is postmodern thinking: "I will not abandon my peers no matter what!" "I" believe they are right, even though the evidence my peers and associates present is of a significant and error-ridden minority posi-tion. Also, most academic institutions and scholars believe the minority evidence (in spite of contrary majority evidence and minority evidence presented by heretics like Westcott and Hort). In addition, it is obvious the PM thinkers' primary concerns are loss of salary, position, friends, and peer group. This is "self" as opposed to "sheep for the slaught-er" (Psa. 44:22, Rom. 8:36).

Dr. Bill Sheffield, Dean of Bible at Louisiana Baptist University, warns that every one of us (believers in the Lord Jesus Christ and His Words), and particularly pastors, will be faced with postmodernism. Space does not allow us to consider post-modernism in "Christian" psychology, Is-lamic jihad, politics, church stats, crime stats, and more. It is there. It is a sign of the "last days."

"This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves." (2 Tim. 3:1-2a)
